Our
program of architectural education proceeds from a central principal of student
centered learning. It assumes that if you want to produce capable, intelligent,
well-grounded architects, you have to locate the program of education at the
site of learning- the student.
We believe that it is essential to the future of the profession of architecture that the practice of architecture be a critical practice. To accomplish this, the student must learn how to form ethical and intelligent positions. Our program aids in this essential process by producing well-formulated projects and sequences of projects. They are well-crafted questions designed to place the student in close contact with significant architectural situations from which findings can be gathered and insights gained. This mode of operation places the student at the very locus of the production of knowledge along with its attendant uses and meanings. The mastery issuing from this kind of inquiry should result in producing a humane, significant, and comprehensive architecture.
Our teaching approach has as its basis the proposition that learning depends upon the internalization of experiences rather than an acquisition of norms and rules. Our main objective is to provide the environment for the learning process to occur most effectively. This is achieved in an environment which is heuristic in nature, that is, design studios in which the primary objectives are exploration and discovery of important architectural and design issues of our day.
