Us
The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools
of Music and offers a Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations
in performance, music media, theory-composition, piano pedagogy, and jazz.
The Bachelor of Music degree is a professional program with primary emphasis
on development of the skills, concepts, and knowledge essential to the professional
life of the musician. The Bachelor of Music Education is offered
in conjunction with the College of Education. This degree prepares students
to teach music at the elementary and secondary levels. Programs in both
instrumental and vocal certification are offered. The School of Music also
provides community services primarily in the areas of performance and consultation.
Complementing the
Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education undergraduate degrees
is the Master of Music graduate degree. Concentrations in the Master
of Music degree are designed to allow students to specialize in the
areas of performance, music education, theory-composition, conducting,
or pedagogy.
University Setting
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is the largest of the state institutions
of higher learning under the Board of Trustees system, serving over 16,000
students. The University is situated in Lafayette, a city with a population
of over 95,000 and the central city of the geographic area known as Acadiana.
The School of Music is an accredited member of the National Association
of Schools of Music and adheres to standards set forth by that agency.
Size
The School of Music has an enrollment of approximately 200 students in
undergraduate and graduate programs. Over 20 faculty serve the 7 baccalaureate
and 4 masters degree emphases offered by the School of Music. The ratio
of students to faculty is roughly 10 to 1, with the average undergraduate
class size being 14 students. At the graduate level the average class
size is 6 students.
Music Facilities
The School of Music occupies Angelle Hall, which consists of two adjoining
buildings equipped with instructional and performance facilities. All
classrooms are equipped with modern audio and video capabilities. Facilities
include 40 practice rooms and 3 large ensemble rehearsal rooms. Concert
facilities include Angelle Hall Theater, An 800 seat hall, and the Choral-Recital
Hall, a 125 seat hall used for lectures as well as recitals. Angelle Hall's
special facilities include the Griffin Electronic Music Studio, The Griffin
Recording Studio, and the Inez Biossat Griffin Music Resource Center.
These facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art electronic and computer
technology to support School of Music activities in research, composition,
recording and instruction.
Scholarships
and Assistantships
The School of Music provides talent and service scholarships to nearly
90% of the student body. These range from ensemble awards of $100 to full-tuition
scholarships. Privately endowed scholarships are awarded through the UL
Lafayette Foundation and are granted through competitive auditions. Graduate
Assistantships are available in all areas of study. Stipends vary from
$2250 to $4500, plus waiver of in-state and out-of-state tuition.
