Undergraduate
The School of Music provides financial assistance to
most of its students in the form of scholarships and stipends. Students
must be admitted to the University to be eligible for School of Music
scholarships. Criteria for admissions standards are available from the
Office of Enrollment Management at (337) 482-6553 (enroll@louisiana.edu)
There are seven types of scholarships which are available through the
School of Music. They are:
- 1. Endowed Scholarships: Are available
for music majors in keyboard, guitar, voice, strings, and band instruments.
Approximately fifteen awards are made each year. These ranging in size
from $500 to $1,000 per academic year. Selection is made through competitive

- 2. Band: The basic marching band stipend
(currently $500 for the Fall semester) is available for students of
any major who complete the marching band season. No audition is required
for this basic award. Stipend amounts in excess of $500, or continuation
of the award for the Spring semester are available on a competitive

- 3. Choral: Students of any major are
eligible for the choral ensemble stipend which ranges fro $400 to $800
per academic year. An audition is required. For more information, contact

- 4. Jazz: Jazz awards are available for
outstanding musicians performing with a jazz ensemble. Audition requirements
include scales plus two contrasting jazz tunes that demonstrate the
applicant's improvisation ability. Contact Dr. Robert Luckey

- 5. Orchestra: Scholarships and stipends
are available ranging from $400 to full tuition to music majors as well
as non-music majors who join the University orchestra. The orchestra
has openings for players in all sections including strings, woodwinds,
brass, and percussion. Students are encouraged to arrange an audition

- 6. Academic Scholarships: Information
regarding academic scholarships is available from the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette scholarship Office. entering freshmen with a
3.0 cumulative grade point average and who score at least a 22 on the
ACT (minimum of 7 on the English, and minimum or 19 on the math) are

- 7. Friends of Music Scholarships: Are
available for music majors in any performance area. Approximately six
awards are made each year. The amount is normally $500 per academic
year. Selection is made through competitive auditions which are held

Graduate
Admission to the Graduate School is made through the
Office of the Dean of the Graduate School (337) 482-6965 or gradschool@louisiana.edu
for graduate school. Generally, the requirements include an undergraduate
degree in music from an accredited music school, and a minimum composite
score of 1270 (380 on verbal) on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
Some graduate students qualify for graduate assistantships.
The stipend for assistantships is $5,500 per year, plus a tuition waiver.
These are available on a competitive basis to graduate students in music
in all areas of performance. The deadline for application is usually early
