About Us
The Department of Performing Arts in the College of the Arts exists as
a community of learners--artists and scholars committed to artistic and
intellectual excellence. Through a laboratory for teaching, research,
and creative endeavors, we promote innovation in a nurturing and collaborative
environment. While honoring the traditions of the past and present, we
seek to shape the future by challenging ourselves, our students, and our
society to consider the ever-changing nature and function of the Performing
Arts.
The Department understands
as its goal, together with the Department of Visual Art and the Schools
of Architecture and Music, to pursue with vigor the highest standards
of artistic and intellectual excellence for its faculty, its students,
and its community, and to ensure the continued vitality of the arts as
the quintessential multicultural and multidisciplinary enterprise in an
increasingly pragmatic world. The arts celebrate the greatest achievements
of the past and provide a road map for the creation of the future. Theatre
and dance share with all the arts the mission of addressing both the minds
and hearts of humanity. This precept ultimately guides all Department
of Performing Arts activities, both academic and practical. Our mission
embraces our students, as well as the university, local and global communities.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Performing Arts is to educate and train
artists and scholars, and to provide for its students a foundation of
professionalism and dedication to their art within a climate of diversity,
discovery, and innovation. It strives to develop in its students and audiences
an enduring passion for theatre and dance.
To ensure the fusion of education and training, the Department promotes
close collaboration among the theatre and dance areas within the Department,
as well as interdisciplinary cooperation with departments and programs
on this and other campuses. It integrates the latest technology in classes
and productions. The faculty is composed of dedicated practicing artists,
teachers, and scholars who are committed to research and creative activity.
The Department:

requires that its majors gain experience in production and performance;
holds weekly department meetings of all students and faculty;
expects its majors to take rigorous academic classes both in and
outside of the Department;
enriches the curriculum with innovative projects, tours and guest
artists and teachers; and
