EXPECTATIONS
The faculty expects students that are self-disciplined, passionate about
the arts and committed to giving 100% in the classroom and in production.
The ideal student will:
- attend class on a daily basis,
- maintain a respectable G.P.A. each semester
- learn time management skills (keep a daily schedule calendar - 15
minutes early is on time, on time is late, and late is unheard of),
- always be on time for class and rehearsal (early is preferable),
- always learn their lines, choreography and/or music on or before
the due date,
- always work outside of rehearsal on their character, choreography
or performance assignment,
- respect their professors, classmates, cast and crew,
- accept constructive criticism from professors in the spirit it is
given (to provide honest feedback and improve the quality of the students
educational experience),
- respect the facilities in which they work (always pick up after yourself),
- support the image of excellence the PFAR Department strives to convey
on a daily basis.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
All students should understand that their first artistic commitment is to
UL Lafayette Performing Arts Department productions. PFAR productions take
precedence over community theatre productions, productions at the Heymann
Performing Arts Center, the Cajun Dome or other producing organizations.
All performance students are expected to audition for each production. Only
extreme circumstances should keep a student from auditioning or being involved
backstage or front-of-house activities. Performers not cast are expected
to contribute to each and every production (i.e. working on the crew - light,
set, sound, costumes, props, or as a house manager, usher or ticket agent).
All PFAR majors are required to participate in departmental productions
on a semester basis.
Technicians and arts
administrators are also expected to contribute on each production working
on the crew or in the scene or costume shop. Failure to contribute to
the program on a regular basis will be noted at the end of semester Assessment
process with noted recommendations.
WORK
The faculty understands the need for many students to work. However, past
statistics have proven that many of our majors fail to apply for financial
aid (work study or other Federal or State aid). Please see the UL
Lafayette Financial Aid Office to receive instructions on when and
how to apply. In addition, many of our students have not applied for departmental
scholarships or taken advantage of the few assistantships that may be
available. Without question, the 2.75 cumulative and departmental 3.0
G.P.A. scholarship eligibility requirement may affect the number of students
that audition or interview for the available scholarships. Scholarship
criteria may differ for scholarships created by donors outside of the
department. However, the fact remains, that to truly take advantage of
the educational and production opportunities the department and the College
of the Arts has to offer, a student must be available to participate.
Completing the required PFAR curriculum alone will not make a student
competitive in the arts. Production participation is imperative for a
student to have a chance to succeed in the respective worlds of theatre
and dance. Please see the Financial Aid office counselors to explore all
possible options to allow you to succeed.
