Department of Visual Arts Ceramic Area Fires New Wood Fired Kiln

The Department of Visual Arts Ceramics area fired the newly completed Wood-fire Train Kiln, affectionately named the “GarganoGama”, on the 18th of November, 2016. The firing lasted 70 hours in duration using only wood as a fuel source and cooled for a period of 7 days. The kiln was filled with hundreds of pieces generated by students, faculty and resident Lafayette ceramic artists. The firing was led by Professor John Gargano and visiting ceramic artist Chris Pate. Chris travelled from Oregon to enlighten the university community with his knowledge and experience in wood fired ceramics. A stop-motion video of the entire firing and the results is available for viewing below.
