Students in the UNIV 100 Class, ‘The Classical Art Music of the World Wars’ produced a project called “Beauty in Destruction”.  The student project tied for First Place in the Creative/Arts Category in the Office of First Year Experience’s UNIV 100 Showcase.  Professor of Music, Chan Kiat Lim offered the course last semester that explored a catalogue of music that was impacted, influenced, and inspired by the World Wars. My freshmen students came from various disciplines within the University with only a handful of music majors, many with no music background.

As these students learned about a catalogue of music that emerged from the horror and devastation of the World Wars, students were moved by how the arts has the power to lift humanity from the most difficult of times. With the guidance of Mr. Ken Broussard, a member of the Quilters Guild of Acadienne, students responded with a quilt project called “Beauty in Destruction: A Quilt to Inspire.” It was a powerful response to social wars that we continue to flight today.

Students created a quilt that is made out of 9 smaller quilts, each is a personal expression, and collectively, they aim to bring awareness on campus on current social issues related to gender equality, race, diversity, poverty, rape, religion, immigration, bullying, and LGBT. This collection of quilts uses art to find beauty and strength amid destruction while inspiring faith in humanity.

Congratulations to all students who made this project a great success: Danielle Baiamonte, Nicholas Bourgeois, Anthony Bruce, John Callais, Alfred Coleman, Jared Denais, Chet Duet, Alyson Dupuis, Eliza Eligio, Drew Feigles, Ava Howard, Khaled Jaber, Taylor Landry, LeeAnn Law, Patrick Maroney, Gage Mayers, Bailey Meaux, Sean Mowry, Megan Owen, Savannah Pierre, Corinne Salter, Nicholas Stelly, Jailyn Stevenson, and Bailey Thomas.
