Top Stories

The recent jazz CD release, Stratus, by Garth Alper was awarded an excellent review by the highly-respected publisher/website All About Jazz. The album, which features seven originals by Alper—as well as two jazz standards—received four out five stars by critic Edward Blanco. In addition to Garth’s composing and piano playing, the album features Chris Munson on drums, Bob Nash on drums, Jeff George on guitar, and Michael Jenner on sax, all of whom are current or former UL Lafayette music faculty members. The review states, "Dr. Alper, coordinator of Jazz Studies at the University of Louisiana (UL) in Lafayette, draws on a handful of faculty members at UL, in creating a very formidable quintet that provides 'their own artistic insights' into crafting and producing the album. The result, of course, is a splendid and exciting session of straight jazz that's quite appealing.” Blanco also notes, Alper crafts another intriguing music.
