Allen Jones

Professor of Visual Arts in Painting

Professor Allan Jones first came to UL Lafayette in 1965, staying for 5 years before he took a position at Antioch College.  He returned to UL Lafayette in 1986 and has been here since.  With almost 40 years of service here, he has served as Head of the Department of Visual Arts, as the area coordinator for the department’s painting concentration and teaching painting, design and drawing courses. During this time Professor Jones has served as a role model for departmental faculty and students in his concern and dedication to the creative process, teaching practices, and our shared responsibilities to our students, faculty, college and the university. 

Professor Jones’s has maintained an inspiring level of teaching and leadership skills within the classroom. Under his direction students have thrived and have continued to excel in advanced placement into advanced degree programs throughout the United States.  

He understands that good teaching is an extension of an active professional research agenda. His work has received critical attention and has brought recognition to the department and institution. Professor Jones has had his work exhibited in museums and galleries internationally, nationally, and regionally at the Atelier-Galerie Alain Piroir, Montreal, Quebec; the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Museum, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Lafayette, LA; Casa Frela Gallery, New York, NY; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; the Acadiana Center for the Arts; the University of Miami; Arizona State University; the Kohn Turner Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Claremont Graduate University; the San Diego Art Institute; Longview Museum and Art Center; the Carnegie Art Center; the Oxford Museum; University of Denver, Denver; The New Museum, New York; Wright State University, Dayton; the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center; University of Kentucky among other galleries and venues. Professor Jones has consistently pursued his artistic vision without compromising his commitment, dedication and continuing success in his teaching and service to the University. 

Mr. Jones is one of those rare faculty/teachers that we all aspire to be. Professor Jones is truly one of ULL’s most distinguished professors who has made major contributions to the artistic arena and across the university.

Department Head of Visual Arts, Matthew LaRose could have been speaking for the whole college when he wrote: “We celebrate his return to his studio pursuits but will miss his congeniality, his committed teaching, guidance and mentorship which continues to affect the lives of students and remains an example to his fellow faculty.”

Dr. Susan Lein,

Lecturer in Class Piano

Dr. Sue Lein graduated with a B.A. in Applied Music (1963) and a B.S. in Music Education (1966) from Augustana, Sioux Falls, S.D. and the University of Wyoming, respectively. She also received Masters (1972) and Doctorates (1980) from the University of Wyoming and the University of South Dakota, respectively.

Dr. Lein has performed as soloist with orchestras in Michigan, South Dakota, and Louisiana. She has also given numerous concerts in the Northwestern and Northcentral areas of the United States, in Texas and Louisiana. She has performed as a member of various symphony orchestras, choral and chamber groups, and for a variety of musical productions. Her performance instruments are Piano and Harp. She composes music for Band and Choral groups in her spare time.
