Lisa Loeb Participates in Music Marketing and Promotion Class

Top Stories

Lisa Loeb, singer-songwriter, touring artist, author, and philanthropist who started her career with the platinum-selling Number 1 hit song “Stay (I Missed You)” from the film Reality Bites, recently participated in a video-conference with UL's Music Marketing and Promotions class. As a trailblazing independent artist, Lisa was the first pop musician to have a Number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. Lisa shared stories about cutting her path in the industry, her sustainability as an artist, and growing and diversifying her music and brand.

In discussing the importance of brand, Lisa related, "Some people are really good at coming up with an imaginatively fabricated alter ego that is communicated in a really bold way," adding, " For me, I just try to pick and choose projects that I personally relate to and then try to spread the word about those things in a way that also feels true to me, but that can reach as many people possible." This philosophy has served her well even when there have bumps along the way. Being so tied to her iconic cat-eyed glasses, Lisa discussed some of the struggles she had with being identified as simply 'the girl with glasses.' Even so, she recognized its importance and ability to be a gateway into her music, and instead of fighting it, welcomed it with open arms. Case in point - being an entrepreneur too, she now has her own Lisa Loeb Eyewear, with a variety of styles available at Costco and select optical shops around the United States. During the video conference, she also touched on the importance of forming networks, the power of collaborating, and the role social media plays in her marketing and promoting. Students then asked Lisa questions about overcoming obstacles, growing a fan base, and the class even discussed her take on being a female in a predominantly male industry.
