Jim Firmin's works grace the Dean's Gallery this Spring

Jim Firmin's photographs and drawings have graced the Dean's Gallery through the months April - May.

Jim Firmin, an AIA Architect hailing from Morgan City, LA, is a graduate of Hanson Memorial High School in Franklin, LA. Although he has spent most of his adult life in Morgan City, he embarked on his academic journey at "USL," where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1966, followed by an MBA degree in 1987. During his student years, he played a pivotal role in mobilizing fellow students to advocate for the accreditation of the University's Department of Architecture, achieving success in this endeavor. Jim reminisces about the lasting impact of this achievement whenever he visits the department.

Jim's photographs exemplify a deep-seated passion for travel, nature, family, and architecture. Through the lens of his astute camera and a skillful juxtaposition of colors, his images encapsulate the essence of diverse cultures and breathtaking locales around the world. The second segment of his exhibition unveils his series of holiday cards. Each card features intricate drawings of architectural marvels, cozy houses, and other structures, harmoniously paired with heartfelt holiday messages.

Today, he continues to practice architecture in Morgan City and actively participates in various boards and national and international organizations. In addition to his many pursuits, he has coordinated scholarship programs to support public housing students in pursuing higher education and assisting underprivileged students in China with access to high school education.

Jim holds dear the memory of receiving unsolicited help when facing a career-threatening financial challenge during the summer before his final year of architectural studies. A small scholarship awarded to him during that crucial period made a world of difference in his life. Grateful for his time at USL, Jim feels indebted and aspires to pay it forward through the Jim Firmin Endowed Scholarship for Architecture and the Jim Firmin Endowed SOAD Enhancement Fund. He hopes this scholarship and the enhancement fund will benefit students in need, particularly those who demonstrate a strong work ethic, engage in activities that benefit others, and may struggle with self-confidence.
