Department of Visual Arts Marais Press and Printmaking Student Group P.R.E.S.S. Sponsor Visiting Artist Workshops During Fall Semester

The Department of Visual Arts Marais Press and the printmaking student organization P.R.E.S.S. will host two visiting artists during the fall semester. While at Marais Press these artists will be working with printmaking students in the production of a printed edition, presenting workshops and or lectures in the Department of Visual Arts.

October 31- November 3rd: Oscar Gillespie

Oscar Gillespie is currently a Professor and Coordinator of the Printmaking at Bradley University, where he has been a member of the faculty since January of 1986. He teaches printmaking and drawing. As a printmaker, he is noted for his expertise in monotypes and in intaglio, especially metal-plate engraving. Exhibiting widely since 1974, he has shown his work in more than 300 solo, group, invitational and juried exhibitions. His work may be found in more than 60 public collections, including the Fogg Museum, Harvard; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Denver Art Museum; the Lauren Rogers Museum, Laurel, Mississippi; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, the New York Public Library; the Plains Museum, Fargo, North Dakota; and the National Museum of Posnan, Poland.

Gillespie works from intuition. An eye, the bud of a rose and even the essential nodes of pleasure that encourage ecstasy are each of the same related beauty and shape. Existence contains myriad new moments of confirmation that everything may be boiled down to the essential elements of the broth of life, and these essential forms may be traced and experienced universally through the expression of an open-minded making of marks on a plate or page.
