The UL School of Music Faculty will present a free performance of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale).

The performance will take place on Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Angelle Hall Auditorium.

Faculty performing will include: Eric Melley, conductor; Michael Blaney. violin; Renee Breaux, clarinet; Robin Hochkeppel, bassoon; Paul Morton, trumpet, Eddie Muller, trombone; Robert Nash, bass; Troy Breaux, percussion; Shawn Roy, narrator.

Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale (1918), describes the story of a young soldier in WWI, who gives his soul (represented by the violin) to the devil (represented by the percussion) in exchange for a book that predicts the economy of the future. The narrative and music then tell a captivating story of searching, doubt, and personal redemption. It is a theatrical piece.  Mr. Shawn Roy will play the parts of the soldier, the devil, and the narrator.

L’Histoire du Soldat is one of the greatest works of the twentieth century.  It is full of the wit and humor. The rhythms are always shifting and changing, and the music incorporates elements of jazz, Viennese waltz, and ragtime.
