NOMAS Participates in National Design Competition

The UL Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) participated in the Annual NOMA Student Design Competition, held during the 44th Annual NOMA Conference in Exhibition in Los Angeles, California on October 13th-16th. A team of seven students worked tirelessly through the spring, summer and fall semesters on their submission for the competition. Their submission, titled The Pulse of Equity, was a design for an African American Cultural Center in the Leimert Park neighborhood in Los Angeles. The design addressed the unique experiences of African Americans in America through a sequence of spaces that highlighted their historic struggle for equity while celebrating their unique cultural contributions and achievements. The design also addressed the contentious history of deed restrictions in Leimert Park and the neighborhood's role in the fight for civil rights. Two senior Architecture students, Chloe Reyes and Quoc Dang presented the project on Saturday, October 15th along with 16 other schools. Jurors for the competition praised UL NOMAS' submission for its thoughtful considerations of context and awarded the submission nine out of ten points in the Design Excellence category.

UL NOMAS holds weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 5:00 pm in Fletcher Hall during the regular semester. For more information about UL NOMAS, please send inquiries to nomaslafayette@gmail.com.
